Race to the pole response

I wonder where those people got there ponies from, because the book has the chapter ' A Car And some Ponies ', and that is not the first chapter of the book, which makes me wonder where they they came from, how they came to and who they came from. I also wonder why the author called it a car and some ponies because the chapter doesn't seem about cars and ponies, it seems more about food, water, dogs and carrying loads. This chapter is chapter number five, and I would not understand the book very much if I had not read more of the book to help me see that it is a true book, since I would've told the author to change it if I could tell him/her.
